Humans have two sets of teeth throughout their lives.


The primary dentition, also known as the deciduous dentition, is the first set of teeth that emerge in the mouth. It starts to develop in utero at 14 weeks and is finished postnatally at the age of three.


In the absence of congenital abnormalities, dental illness, or trauma, the first teeth in this dentition erupt in the oral cavity at the average age of 6 months, and the last occur at the average age of 28+-4 months.


The deciduous dentition stays intact (with the exception of loss due to dental caries or trauma) until the dentition kid reaches the age of six.


Around that period, the first sucedaneous (permanent) teeth appear in the mouth.


The eruption of these teeth marks the beginning of the transition or mixed dentition stage, which is characterised by the presence of both deciduous and sucedaneous teeth.


The transition phase lasts around 6 to 12 years or until all deciduous teeth have been lost. At that point, the transition from primary to permanent dentition occurs with the appearance of the first permanent incisors.


The mixed dentition phase is typically a challenging time for a young kid due to habits, missing teeth, teeth of various colours and tints, crowding of the teeth, and malposed teeth.


The permanent, or sucedaneous, teeth replace the exfoliated deciduous teeth in a variable series of eruptions.


After the shedding of the deciduous canines and molars, the development of the permanent canines and premolars, and the appearance of the second permanent molars, the permanent dentition (including the roots) is finished (except for the third molars, which are finished at the ages of 18 to 25).


In fact, the permanent dentition phase begins at the age of 12 or older. If no teeth are missing at birth, the entire permanent dentition consists of 32 teeth.
